New Year? New you! Here are five popular health resolutions to start you off right.

2013 is now upon us. Have you written your New Year's resolution list? Let these popular health goals inspire you to care for yourself in the coming months.

1. Quit smoking.
Methods and products to help you ditch nicotine are plentiful these days. Have you tried to quit and failed? Smokers typically make multiple attempts before conquering the habit for good. Don't give up! Keep trying to quit.

2. Lose weight.
Most Americans are overweight today. Let's change that. Start with baby steps: plan moderate goals – say, lose one pound per month – and concentrate on only one goal at at a time. This incremental approach prevents you from giving up or falling for fad diets. Remember, aiming for a healthy weight often requires a lifestyle make-over.

3. Exercise regularly.
Get in the habit: pick an activity you've always wanted to try, open your calendar and sketch out a realistic plan. Want to start jogging? Aim for one mile by March before gradually increasing. Invite a friend to meet with you three days per week. Every time you achieve even a tiny goal, that success motivates you to continue, whereas enormous challenges may cause you to give up.

4. Reduce stress.
Mental health affects your physical health, from your heart to your sleep quality. Stress-reducing activities like yoga or massage yield real, tangible results.

5. Get screened.
Stop putting off that visit to the doctor. Preventative care is as important as responding after you've developed a condition. Screenings are available for many conditions and diseases, from breast cancer to heart disease.
